What is it?

A condition that affects small and medium sized arteries by causing inflammation.

Cause

  • Unknown
  • The the formation and accumulation of:
    • An unusually large number of antibodies
    • Abnormal clustering of certain white blood cells (eosinophilia)
    • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis)
    • Development of inflammatory nodular lesions (granulomatosis)
  • History of:

Symptoms

The prodromal (or allergic) phase (last months to years):

  • Various allergic reactions i.e.
  • Develop late-onset asthma including a cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath?

Then six months or as much as two decades later:

  • Vasculitis (inflammation of various blood vessels of the body which may cause narrowing of affected blood vessels, blocking or slowing the flow of blood to various organs of the body?
  • Inflamed blood vessels may become thin and fragile, potentially rupturing and bleeding into surrounding tissue (bleeding from any orifice)?
  • Bruising from an unknown cause?
  • Blood vessels may become stretched out or develop a bulge (aneurysm)?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Night sweats?
  • Dry cough longer than three weeks or breathing difficulties?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Joint pain (arthralgia)?
  • Muscle pain (myalgia)?
  • Weight loss?
