Intussusception is a condition where the bowel is crushed (‘telescopes’) in on itself and/or where movement of stool is blocked causing a bowel blockage, this can lead to a tear/hole in the intestines.
This causes the bowel walls to press on one another, blocking the bowel.
This can lead to reduced blood flow to that part of the bowel.
It is a bit like a getting a sock turned inside itself
It is the most common cause of bowel blockage in infants and young children.
It tends to happen between the ages of three months to 18 months.

This condition can occur at any point in the digestive tract but is most often found to occur at the junction between the small and the large intestine.
In baby and children this condition can be mistaken for colic.
