Treatment Scabies

This section is about what over the counter treatments are available (not all treatments may be available in that country) and how they help.

Please check all ingredients if one are allergic or sensitive to them
All products are flammable; keep away from naked flames or cigarettes.
Please use all products according to manufacturers instructions for treatments to be effective.
Treat all household members and those who have had close contact (including sexual contact) evening if they have had no symptoms.
It is normal to have itching after treatment. Treatment has not failed; it takes time to kill the mites.
These products should be used for treatment purposes.
They are not repellents.

Aim:

To kill all mites and not have any new burrows forming.

Traditional Insecticides

These treatments contain chemicals that mites by acting on their nervous system and have been traditionally used

Alcoholic Lotions

They are highly inflammable so do not dry hair with hair dryers (let your hair dry naturally) or light objects nearby i.e. cigarettes or be near a naked flame of gas heater.
They get inactivated by chlorine in swimming pools, so one doesnt recommend one goes swimming throughout treatment and it should not be used by asthmatics or eczema patients (alcohol content can irritate skin and can trigger asthma attacks).

Aqueous Products

These come in a range of formulations, e.g. creams, liquids and mousse. They kill mites by acting on their immune system and have been traditionally used.

Scabies treatment

Because lice burrow into the skin, strong treatment is required to reach the mites.
Make sure product is used all over body including scalp, neck, face and ears.
Apply on cool dry skin, not after a bath this makes the product less effective.
Always follow manufacturers directions.
After treatment, put clean clothes and change all bed linen.
If hands washed during treatment, reapply treatment.
Re-treat all areas after one week.
There still may be itching after treatment and inflammation for some weeks. If there are new burrows after second application then the treatment has failed.
All people in close contact should be treated even if they have no symptoms.
Treat all persons who had sexual relations within last six weeks or if one have had scabies before, all sexual relations within last 48 hours.

Vitamins

Multivitamins are not intended to prevent long term conditions, reduce infection and is not proven (or data is weak) to help with cancer.

These are essential nutrients that the body requires in small amounts to function properly.
