Treatment Oral Thrush

Aim:
- To kill fungal infection and to restore good oral hygiene.
Good oral hygiene is when the mouth and teeth look and smell healthy.
- Teeth are free of debris and clean with no plaque, decay, tartar and cavities.
- Good breath.
- Teeth are firmly fixed in gums and gums don’t bleed or hurt when brushed.
- No more sensitivity to teeth.
The main treatment includes anti-fungal products and antiseptic products
Anti-fungal products
- These products kill the fungal infection. If one has dentures, remove dentures while using.
- If symptoms are longer than seven days after using medication please see your medical doctor or dentist.
- If the infection has appeared to clear up, please use for a further two days to prevent re-infection. It should not be used in patients who take warfarin without speaking to your medical doctor or pharmacist first.
- Please note miconazole containing products can interact with warfarin.
Non-alcoholic/Alcoholic Mouthwash
- Mouth washes have antiseptic/antibacterial activity used to decrease plaque, tartar and decrease chance of gum disease, bleeding and cavities.
- They also help with sensitive teeth and come in refreshing flavours to promote good fresh breath.
- It should be used at different times of the day to brushing your teeth for extra protection.
- If fluoride is in products these help to strengthen teeth and reduce tooth decay.
- Some mouth washes contain alcohol and should be used in caution to young children, patients with epilepsy and alcoholism.
- It can be used with antifungal products.
