Onycholysis

What is it?

The separation of a fingernail or toenail from its pink nail bed.

  • The separation occurs gradually and is painless.
It takes four to six months for a fingernail to fully regrow, and and 8- 12 months for toenails.

Symptoms

  • Irregular border between the pink portion of the nail and the white outside edge of the nail?
  • Greater portion of the nail is opaque, either whitened or discolored to yellow or green?
  • Nail may have collected thickened skin underneath the edge of its nail plate?
  • Nail plate may have a deformed shape with pits or indentations in the nail surface
  • Bent nail edge?
  • Coarse thickened nail?
  • Toe nail turn white, yellow, green, brown?

This condition can show similar symptoms to:

  • Retronychia
    • A condition where the proximal nail plate (the part of the nail near the cuticle) grows backward and ingrows into the proximal nail fold, often causing inflammation and pain.
    • This process can lead to multiple, stacked nail plates and is typically triggered by repeated trauma to the nail, such as from tight shoes.
    • Diagnosis involves observing signs like swelling, redness, and onycholysis (separation of the nail from the nail bed).
