General Tips Teething

  • Keep the baby hydrated by giving the baby frequent sips of water.
  • Keep the baby cool with a damp cloth.
  • Choose an orthodontic dummy or teething rings.
    • Rings should be chilled not frozen as they can bruise baby’s gums, do not tie around baby’s neck as they can strangle themselves or the lace can get caught
  • Gently massage gums to relieve pain (please make sure one has washer their hands).
  • One can cool the baby down by using a wet towel.
  • Consider using chilled fruit or vegetables (e.g. bananas or cucumber) under parent supervision for weaned children.
  • Avoid eating objects that can easily be broken into hard pieces because of the risk of choking.
  • Use sugar-free products to prevent tooth decay.

Parent or carer:

  • Avoid adding honey, jam or sugar to baby feeding bottle or pacifiers, one increase the risk of tooth decay.
  • Avoid adding or rubbing alcohol to the gums- it has no pain relieving affect.
  • Medicines should not be added to feeding bottles because it may interact with the milk and no accurate dose can be ensured that the baby has taken it.
  • If breastfeeding- biting should not be a reason to stop breastfeeding.
  • Take turns (with family or friends) to calm the baby down. It can be very stressful.
  • Consider the following to reduce stress:
    • Aromatherapy
    • Pilates
    • Tai-Chi
    • Yoga
    • Reflexology
    • Acupuncture therapy
  • Encourage and support is essential. Please see a psychological expert if very severely affected emotionally.
