General Tips Nappy Rash

  • Change the nappy often.
  • Clean area thoroughly at each nappy change, whole area should be cleaned and allowed to dry.
  • Use gentle wipes,be aware that baby wipes can be too strong for some babies. Those with sensitive skins use cotton wool and warm water instead.
  • Use protective/barrier ointments at each nappy change especially at night each day to try to prevent nappy rash.
  • Avoid plastic pants and tight clothes because they don’t allow the skin to breathe easily and cause skin friction and increased the chances of nappy rash.
  • Disposable nappies with a gel core cause less irritation and tend to draw the contents away from the skin.
  • Loosen the baby’s nappy.
  • As much as possible allow the baby to kick their legs without a nappy.
  • If baby’s bottom is dirty use non-medical baby soap and wash off soap or use water only and pat dry (do not rub) when ready to put the nappy on.
  • Do not use talcum powders.
  • Leave your baby’s nappies off as long as you can so air can get to the skin. A good tip is to lay the baby on a towel same time each day and change towel if wet/dirty.
  • Make sure baby’s bottom is dry before you put nappy on.
  • Always pat dry.
