General Tips Dry Mouth
- Maintain good oral hygiene
- Stop smoking.
- Air humidifiers may help.
- Avoid alcohol-containing mouthwashes.
- Avoid fizzy drinks and frequent snacking especially with high sugar content.
- Avoid spicy foods and high acidic foods.
- Avoid dietary sugars (sweeteners), especially sugar-containing snacks.
- Take frequent sips or sprays of cold water.
- Sucking ice cubes or eating fresh pineapple chunks, or using a partly frozen fruit can help.
- Sugar-free chewing gums may stimulate saliva (if have saliva function).
- Sugar-free gum is also recommended for the management of dry mouth , this will help to stimulate the salivary glands.
- The non-sugar sweetener xylitol may have a role in caries prevention.
- Air conditioned rooms can cause dry mouth and dry throat and make symptoms worst.
- Lip balm can help to limit the drying/cracking of lips again do not share these products.
- Please note no medicine or tips above can cure dry mouth, one must identify the underlying cause and correct such a cause.
- If one wears dentures: one should rinse dentures and the mouth throughout the day especially after meals. Leave dentures out for a least part of the day preferably overnight.
