General Tips Dandruff

  • Try not to itch or scratch the scalp as this can lead to a secondary infection (if one wants to check if they have a skin infection , please go to Medtick Underlying infection service programme)
  • Try not to scratch, keep nails short and in extreme cases wear mittens.
  • Brush your hair at least daily
  • Wash your hair and/or other affected areas at least three times a week (unless directed otherwise) and rinse to remove all  medicated shampoo out.
  • If the scalp or other areas  is covered with widespread scaly skin , it may first be removed by applying warm mineral oil or olive oil to the scalp or other areas and washing several hours later with a  medicated shampoo (do not pick at skin as this may cause a skin infection).
  • Avoid using hair colouring products or hair chemicals, these kill the bacteria which fight the fungus in your scalp.
  • Some hair products can cause white flakes on the scalp (not dandruff) or can build up oils in the scalp causing irritation, or one maybe allergic to that product. Change your hair product.
  • Do not spend to long outside to reduce dandruff, as one can get sun burning and skin cancer. Wear an appropriate sun screen if needed.
  • If eyelids affected , please use cotton buds and mild baby shampoo and carefully wipe one’s eyelids and wash off.
  • Try to have a good balanced diet
  • Cut down on smoking.
  • Cut down on stress, have a hobby and get plenty of sleep.

    • Aromatherapy
    • Pilates,
    • Tai-Chi,

    • Acupuncture therapy
  • Encourage and support is essential. Please see a psychological expert if very severely affected emotionally.
