What is it?

A rare condition where your breasts become excessively large due to excessive breast tissue growth.

  • Gigantomastia
    • Breasts that have an excess of at least 5 pounds of breast tissue.
    • Extra breast tissue that equals more than 3% of your total body weight.
  • Macromastia is usually defined as excess breast tissue that weighs less than 5 pounds.
  • It affects one from birth female at birth and one will notice a rapid and disproportionate breast growth.
  • The speed at which your breasts grow can vary, from over a few weeks to over several years.
  • The tissue is almost always benign (not cancerous).

This condition can lead to:

  • Pain of breast as well as on the neck and spine due to the weight of breasts
  • Infection of breast and skin infection of the surrounding skin
  • Discomfort
  • Issues with body image
Weight loss may help to reduce some breast size and exercise may help to strengthen your core body to help with back pain and neck pain, but one may still have some symptoms.

Cause

  • Some reasons are unknown and could occur suddenly (Idiopathic gigantomastia) – it is the most common form.
  • Family history (ginetics)
  • Puberty (Juvenile gigantomastia)
  • Pregnancy (Gestational gigantomastia)

  • Infection or lesions and/or rash on the skin of your breasts, especially under your breasts?
  • Neck and back pain caused by your breasts pulling you down?

  • Loss of feeling in the nipples?
  • Pain and/or swelling in breast or armpit area not related to your period (mastalgia)?

  • Breast cancer
  • Gynecomastia
  • Fibrocystic breast changes:
    • Noncancerous condition can cause a variety of changes in the breasts, including the accumulation of water in the breast tissue.
    • When your breasts swell and fill with fluid, they’ll feel heavier than usual.
    • These changes can happen in one or both breasts.
    • They might occur every month at a certain point in your cycle or follow no discernable pattern.
    • In some cases, you might have constant symptoms.
      • Free-moving lumps
      • Pain or tenderness that’s often worse right before your period
      • Pain that extends into your armpit or down your arm
      • Appearance or disappearance of lumps or lumps that change size
      • Green or brown nipple dischargeOther common symptoms of fibrocystic breast changes include:
      • As cysts appear and disappear in your breasts, they can cause a scarring and thickening of the breast tissue, called fibrosis (fibrosis). You can’t see these changes, but they can make your breasts feel lumpy or heavier than they used to.
  • Breastfeeding: Engorgement happens when too much milk builds up in your breast.
    • Symptoms of engorgement include:
      • Breast hardness
      • Tenderness
      • Warmth
      • Throbbing pain
      • Redness
      • Flattened nipple
      • Low-grade fever
