Kussmaul breathing

What is it?

  • A type of hyperventilation breathing when the body enters into severe metabolic acidosis (when one has too  much acid in their blood and/or too much acid in one’s organs) i.e diabetes (see causes of metabolic acidosis)
  • Symptoms  include a deep laboured breathing rate, this occurs because the body tries to remove more acidic carbon dioxide from the body than normal to restore our metabolism balance.

Kussmaul sign:

  • Kussmaul sign indicates a rise in pressure of our jugular vein (The jugular veins are in the neck and drain blood from the head, brain, face and neck and sends it toward the heart) when one breathes in (normally the pressure would drop in this vein when one breathes in).
  • This sign means there is problem with one’s heart.

Symptoms

Kussmaul breathing:

  • Deep laboured breathing?
  • Panicked breathing?
  • Gasping for breath?
  • Inhales and/or expiring air becomes noticeable and loud?
