Granuloma annulare

What is it?

They are bumps that appearing over the joints usually after a soft or mild injury.

There are many types:

  • Localized granuloma annulare – non spread local condition
  • Generalized or disseminated granuloma annulare- widespread condition-rash is sometimes made up of small raised spots that form symmetrical rings 10cm (4 inches) or more across.
  • Subcutaneous granuloma annulare
  • Perforating granuloma annulare
  • Linear granuloma

Common areas include:

  • Head
  • Eyelids
  • Ears
  • Armpits
  • Skin folded areas
  • Backs of the hands and tops of the fingers
  • Genitals
  • Buttocks
  • Shins
  • Ankles
  • Tops of the feet
  • Around the elbows
  • Around the knees

The lesions of granuloma annulare are usually found in the same areas on both sides of the body (symmetrically).

  • Allopurinol

Symptoms

  • Appears as small (1–3 mm), skin/flesh-colored or pink bumps?
  • Itching?
  • Bumps appear smooth rather than scaly (occur singly or in groups)?
  • Bump may expand in size, leaving a shallow indentation in the center, which may be lighter or darker than your normal skin colour?
  • Several small bumps may merge to form a ring, 1–5 cm in diameter?
  • Small raised spots that form symmetrical rings 10cm (4 inches) or more across?
  • Lesions of granuloma annulare are usually found in the same areas on both sides of the body (symmetrically)?
