Spider Angioma

What is it?

A grouping of small blood vessels/arterioles dilated  at the skin surface and resembles the threads of a spider’s web.

Common areas include:

  • Face
  • Ears
  • Upper chest
  • Back
  • Arms
  • Hands
  • Legs (spider vein)

Cause

  • For many unknown
  • Liver disease
  • Pregnancy
  • High alcohol consumption
  • Injury
  • Sun exposure
  • Family history: Weak vessel valves may run in families, so if members of your family have spider nevi, you are more likely to get them as well.
  • Obesity: Excess weight can put pressure on your blood vessels.
  • Sitting or standing for long periods of time: Being immobile can prevent the healthy circulation of blood.

  • Hormonal medication i.e.
    • HRT
    • Oestrogen supplements
    • Contraceptive tablets

Vitamins, herbals and minerals

  • Vitamin B Deficiency

Symptoms

  • Red,blue, or purple in colour of 1–10 mm can be on its own or a group?
  • Disappears with direct finger pressure but rapidly returns when the pressure is released?
  • Central red dot and small red lines radiating out from the center?
