What is it?

Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor Associated Periodic Syndrome is a rare genetic disease with episodes of recurrent fever; abdominal, chest, and muscle pain; red and swollen eyes; and a typical rash lasting for attacks last 7 to 21 days (average of 10 days).

  • This condition is part of Hereditary periodic fever syndromes, which are hereditary disorders that periodically cause episodes of fever and other symptoms that are not due to usual childhood infections or any other obvious cause.

Cause

  • Family history
  • Gene defect in a protein called tumor necrosis factor receptor (these are involved in our inflammation processes in our bodies)
  • Infection
  • Trauma
  • Strenuous exercise
  • Psychological stress

Symptoms

  • Periods of fever?
  • Swollen eyes?
  • Joint pain and stiffness?
  • Rash lasting longer than a week, from body to arms and legs?
  • Aching, painful muscles, muscle cramps/spasms/stiffness?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Chest pain?
  • Diarrhoea?
  • Swollen spleen?
