Adult Still’s Disease

What is it?

A rare type of inflammatory arthritis that can destroy the affected joints

  • Some may have a one of episodes while others have the condition constantly.
  • Age is the main risk factor for adult Still’s disease, with incidence peaking twice: once from 15 to 25 years and again from 36 to 46 years.
  • Males and females are equally at risk.

Cause

  • Unknown , maybe i.e.
    • Bacterial infection
    • Viral infection

Symptoms

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than a week?
  • Sore throat longer than seven days (this is one of the first symptoms of adult Still’s disease)?
  • Swollen lymph glands and/or reoccurring mouth ulcers?
  • Rash (A salmon-pink rash might come and go with the fever. The rash usually appears on your trunk, arms or legs)?
  • Joint pain and stiffness (particularly the wrists and knees for longer than two weeks)?
  • Aching, painful muscles, muscle cramps/spasms/stiffness (Muscular pain usually flows with the fever, but the pain can be severe enough to disrupt your daily activities)?
  • Dry cough longer than three weeks?
  • Short of breath or  Breathing difficulties?
  • Chest pain?
  • Liver swelling?
  • Spleen swelling?

This condition can lead to:

  • Heart conditions (inflammation of the saclike covering of your heart (pericarditis) or of the muscular portion of your heart (myocarditis).
  • Respiratory conditions (Inflammation may cause fluid to build up around your lungs, which can make it hard to breathe deeply).
