What is it?

Amenorrhea is the absence of three menstrual periods in a row menstruation (one or more missed menstrual periods) and/or those girls who haven’t begun menstruation by age 15.

Cause

  • Family history
  • Pregnancy
  • Underlying hormonal condition that regulates periods
  • Low body weight
  • Excessive exercise – can lead to a condition called  RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in sport) – when one doses not have enough energy (carbohydrates – glucose) in their diet to support their body movement and biological processes of the body, this can lead to:
    • Stress in the body
    • Aches and pain
    • Change of menstrual bleed and pattern
    • Lethargy and/or tiredness
    • Lack of progression in training
    • Sleep disturbance
    • Low mood and irritability
    • Loosing weight rapidly
    • Anaemia–  leading to Stress fractures
