Valve Disease

What is it?

Heart valves (see images) are small flaps of skin that helps to stop blood that flows through the heart travelling in the wrong direction.

  • Some persons have no symptoms while other may notice it suddenly if a severe form  develops
  • Some persons develop symptoms slowly as the the disease becomes progressively worst.
  • The heart may compensate the damage over a period of time, but their maybe a point where the heat cannot compensate anymore and damage to the heart is not reversible.
  • Prevention and slowing the condition down in this case is the best cure.

Valve Terminology

  • A valve that has become to floppy is known as a prolapse.
  • A valve that leaks and therefore blood flows the wrong was is knowns as regurgitation
  • A valve that does not open as wide as it should is known as stenosis.

Symptoms

  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Short of breath and/or breathing difficulties (whether after exercise or not) and/or wheezing?
  • Lightheadedness?
  • Balance and dizziness problems and/or ‘fainting attacks’?
  • Chest pain and/or tight chest and/or pressure on chest and or chest discomfort?
  • Rapid heartbeat?
  • Heart palpitations and/or irregular heartbeats?
  • Coughing when lying down?
  • Fluid retention/bloated of abdomen?
  • High blood pressure?
  • Oedema or swelling, of one’s legs and/or ankles and/or feet?
