Congenital Cytomegalovirus

What is it?

A viral infection caused by the herpes virus family where one experiences at some point in their lives usually with no symptoms, however if one has a weak immune system, one can experience serious symptoms.


Diagnostic tests

  • Saliva test – first 3 weeks of life
  • Urine culture – first 3 weeks of life

 

Cause

  • Virus is passed on from infected mother to unborn child

Symptoms

This condition can lead to:

  • Problems moving around due to poor mental activity
  • Muscle weakness and stiffness
  • Blindness
  • Deafness
  • Seizures may develop

Mother and baby

  • If mother and baby have/have not condition:
    • Washing hands essential as virus can shed in urine, saliva and breast milk.

 

New-borns who have herpes can be fatal, beware of Neonatal herpes, congenital rubella syndrome and cytomegalovirus infections
