Bowen’s Disease (skin cancer)

What is it?

Growth of cancer on the outer layer of the skin.

More than one lesion can be present.
It can spread to other parts of the body as other type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma.
This condition can be referred as Intraepidermal squamous cell carcinoma.

Common areas include mainly sun exposed areas:

Head and scalp
Hands and fingers
groin/genital areas
Lower legs and feet

Person with new skin condition and/or many moles and unusual moles should check themselves once a month and should be checked by your medical doctor/dermatologist every 4–12 months depending on their past history/family history and/or sun exposure or if one experienced anything unusual.

Cause

Exposure to the sun or use of sunbeds
Skin type – skin that burns easily and tans poorly
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
Patients with weak immune system
Arsenic poisoning

Symptoms

Slightly thickened red and scaly patch of skin?
Appears as a persistent reddened scaly patch on the skin that is 1-3 cm in diameter?
Skin affected can be red and sore?
Skin affected may bleed and scab?
Appearance of a brown patch/warts around the groin area (Bowenoid papulosis)?
Appearance of white patches in mouth/gums and/or tongue and/or female vagina (leukoplakia)?
Skin not responding to simple moisturisers?
