Treatment Insomnia

This section is about what over the counter treatments are available (not all treatments may be available in that country) and how they help.
  • Please check all ingredients to check if not allergic or sensitive to its contents.
  • All products can make one drowsy, do not drink alcohol or operate any machinery or drive.
  • Do not drink alcohol with these medications.
  • Children should not be left unattended.
  • It is very important to find the CAUSE of insomnia as one does not want to rely on sleeping tablets.

Aim:

  • To help one to sleep and allow them to get on with their daily routine.

 

Products mainly used are ant-histamines and herbal medication

  • Only use products known to be efficacious and safe.
  • Use the lowest dose for the shortest time and aim for intermittent dosing because tolerance and dependence are more likely to develop with continuous dosing.

Anti-histamines

  • Some antihistamines cross the blood brain barrier and make one drowsy.
  • They should only be used when required for a few days and not on a regular basis as one can start relying on the tablets for sleep.
  • Always take the lowest strength possible to reach the desired effect.
  • If using for the first time, take the lowest strength and see if it works.
  • If so, stick to that dose, if not consider a higher dose or strength,your pharmacist can advice you accordingly.
  • These preparations tend to cause hangover-like effects and should be avoided in the elderly who are more prone to these side effects.
  • These products are not a substitute for the stronger sleeping products available on prescription and one should not drink any alcohol.
  • They should start working within 20 minutes of taking the tablet and are only for ages 16-18 years and older (depending on the country you are in).
  • Do not use herbal products and antihistamines together unless your doctor/pharmacist says otherwise.

Herbal Products

  • Are natural plant extracts and are said to help one to relax and aid sleep.
  • They should not be used with sleeping tablets unless medical advice from your pharmacist or medical doctor says otherwise.

Vitamins

Multivitamins are not intended to prevent long term conditions, reduce infection and is not proven (or data is weak) to help with cancer.

These are essential nutrients that the body requires in small amounts to function properly.
