General Tips Fever

  • Rest and recover.
  • One can cool down the person with fever by using a normal or slightly wet towel with lukewarm water. Avoid an excess wet tile or tepid sponging as this can cause shivering. Shivering can make ones fever go up.
  • Sit in a bath of lukewarm water, which will feel cool when you have a fever. (Cold water will actually cause your body to warm up instead of cool down.) Give yourself a sponge bath with lukewarm water.
  • Drink plenty of water (avoid coffee, tea, fizzy drinks, alcohol drinks) to prevent dehydration. (However, if one is not eating or drinking at all and/or has a lack of energy – take a small amount of some sugary/glucose products to keep energy levels up), one can also consider (caution in young children):
    • Juice (Not too often as it contains many sugar, caution if sensitive to sugar i.e gum disease, diabetes)
    • Sports drinks (Not too often as it contains many sugar, caution if sensitive to sugar i.e gum disease, diabetes)
    • Broths (Heat from soups/broths provide energy and cooling effect)
    • Soups (Heat from soups/broths provide energy and cooling effect)
    • Decaffeinated tea
  • Keep the room at a steady temperature which is not to warm or cold.
  • Open the window to achieve some air circulation in the room.
  • Wear suitable clothing that is not too hot or too cold.
  • Children with fever should not be underdressed or over-wrapped.
  • Consider treatments for fever if suitable (speak to healthcare professional first).
