Urticaria Vasculitis

What is it?

Urticarial vasculitis is a rare form of vasculitis that affects the skin, causing wheals or hives and/or red patches due to swelling and inflammation of the small blood vessels, this can cause poor blood circulation.

It has two forms:

  • One with normal levels of proteins called complements;
  • The other with low levels of complements; it’s called hypocomplementemic vasculitis

Symptoms

(Symptoms are similar to hives and one can have ‘episodes’ of this condition)

  • Swollen, raised bumps on the skin which one can see and/or feel?
  • Itchy skin?
  • Painful skin?
  • Red or discoloured skin?

Severe symptoms of urticarial vasculitis are rare, but include:

  • Fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Joint pain?
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Lymphedema (swollen lymph nodes)?
  • Red eye?
  • Fever?
  • Shortness of breath?
  • Kidney pain?
  • Angioedema?
  • Unexplained bruising on the skin after the episode of eruption is over?

Complications /Information to beware of/General tips:

Do not wait, phone for ambulance if have or develop:

  • Severe breathing problems
  • Vision loss
  • Low blood pressure
  • Heart attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Steven-Johnson syndrome
  • Ciguatera fish poisoning
  • Shock:
    • Rapid heart rate (rapid pulse)
    • Rapid breathing
    • Dilated pupils
    • Pale, cool skin
    • Sweating (diaphoresis)
    • Yawning
  • If shock occurs (whilst awaiting for an ambulance):
    • Lay the person down (if their injuries allow it) and raise and support their legs
    • Use a coat or blanket to keep them warm, but do not cover their face or the burnt area
    • Do not give them anything to eat or drink

  • Wear loose-fitting clothes
