Epididymitis

What is it?

Infection and swelling caused by fluid build up in epididymis (behind the testicles that stores sperm).

  • It can occur at any age.

Cause

All types of lumps or swellings can be caused by:

Medication

  • Amiodarone
Variococele Unknown
Vein problems and conditions
Hydrocele: Injury
Infection
Tumour (cancer or non-cancerous growth)
When born a passage between abdomen and scrotum closes, if it doesn’t then one has
fluid build up.
Epididymal cyst Unknown
Kidney cysts
Testicular torsion Tumour (cancer or non-cancerous growth)
Where one is without one or both testicles

Symptoms

  • Sudden pain in one or both of the testicles?
  • Scrotum will feel tender, warm and swollen?
  • Build-up of fluid around the testicle (a hydrocele), which will feel like a lump or swelling?
  • Discharge from the tip of the penis?
  • Difficult to urinate?
  • Need to urinate more often?

  • Lie in bed with your scrotum raised
  • Wear a scrotal support
  • Hold a cold pack to your groin (try a pack of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel)
