Vaginal Prolapsed

What is it?

The uterus (womb) sits above the vagina, if the uterus (womb) muscles, tissues and ligaments become weak the uterus then moves down from its normal position and can slip into the vagina.

Prolapse can occur in stages:

Levels of prolapsed Description
First degree Lower section uterus (cervix) still in vagina
Second degree Lower section uterus (cervix) is outside vagina
Third degree Whole uterus is outside vagina

Cause

Treatments

  • Pelvic surgery i.e. hysterectomy
  • Bladder surgery

Symptoms

  • Sensation of having something coming down in your vagina?
  • Heavy feeling in vagina?
  • Feeling full?
  • Change of appearance in vagina region?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Pain in pelvis area and/or lower back and/or intense pain in the back or side (or moving pain from back to side) or in groin area?
  • Difficulty walking?
  • Discomfort when having sexual intercourse?
  • Vaginal discharge?
  • Feel full quickly when eating, trapped wind and burping?
  • Increase thirst, heavy sweating and need to urinate frequently?
  • Rectal bleeding (anus)?
  • Find passing stools difficult and constipated?
  • Recurrent cystitis/vaginal conditions?

Complications /Information to beware of/General tips:

This condition can lead to :

  • Bacterial infections of the vagina:
    • High temperature greater than 38°C, 100°F or over greater than 72 hours, chills and sweats
    • Recurrent cystitis
    • Lower tummy pain
    • Heavy vaginal bleeding
    • Smelly vaginal discharge
    • Recurrent thrush
