Thorn’s Syndrome

What is it?

Rare disorder resulting from renal tubular damage of unknown cause and is characetised by an abnormal loss of sodium from the kidney.

Cause

Symptoms

  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Tanning of the skin?
  • Nausea and vomiting?
  • Weight loss?

Medical Emergency Condition

And/or do not wait, phone for an ambulance if have or develop:

  • Hyponatremia
  • Azotemia (increased levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine levels)
  • Metabolic acidosis
  • Dehydration
  • Vascular collapse (Peripheral circulatory collapse involves outlying arteries and veins in the body and can result in gangrene, organ failure or other serious complications)
  • Shock:
    • Rapid heart rate (rapid pulse)
    • Rapid breathing
    • Dilated pupils
    • Pale, cool skin
    • Sweating (diaphoresis)
    • Yawning
  • If shock occurs (whilst awaiting for an ambulance):
    • Lay the person down (if their injuries allow it) and raise and support their legs
    • Use a coat or blanket to keep them warm, but do not cover their face or the burnt area
    • Do not give them anything to eat or drink
