Stroke (Be aware of symptoms, can occur at anytime)

What is it?

When blood flow to the brain is slowed down or stopped. The brain tissue cells being to die and can lead to brain damage and death.

  • A mini stroke (Transient Ischemic Attack) is when blood supply to brain is temporarily slowed down and can be a warning sign for a major stroke.
  • Mini stroke symptoms are similar to full stroke symptoms.

There are two types:

  • Ischaemic:
    • Blood supply stopped by a clot
  • Haemorrhagic:
    • Blood vessel supplying blood to the brain bursts mainly due to high blood
Be aware of also any increase in floaters” and “blind spots in your vision
In the meantime, chew on aspirin 300mg (make sure you are not allergic to aspirin) tablet while waiting for ambulance.
Aspirin prevents blood clots and reduce chances of heart attack or stroke

  • Oral contraceptives tablets
  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Oestrogen supplements

Symptoms

(Symptoms can vary depending on which part of brain affected.)

  • Face: Has the face fallen one side, person may not be able to smile, mouth and eyes have dropped?
  • Arms or legs: Can one not raise both arms and/or legs and keep them there?
  • Speech: Does one have dizziness, drowsiness, slurred speech?
  • Any prolonged or constant problems with balance and coordination?
  • Any sudden difficulty in swallowing?
  • Sudden severe headache with no cause?
  • Any numbness / weakness or no movement on any part of body?
  • Sudden loss of vision and/or sudden blurring vision to one or both eyes?
Be aware of also any increase in “floaters” and “blind spots” in your vision

Medical Emergency

Do not wait, phone for an ambulance.

In the meantime, chew on aspirin 300mg (make sure you are not allergic to aspirin) tablet while waiting for ambulance.

This condition can lead to:

      • Apraxia
      • Locked in syndrome (Paralyzed except for the muscles that control eye movement. Conscious (aware) and can think and reason, but cannot move or speak; although they may be able to communicate with blinking eye movements)
        • It is caused by is caused by any lesion affecting the ventral pons, and midbrain.
        • Other causes include: Vascular (blood vessel) lesions, masses (lumps and cancers), infections, traumas, and demyelinating disorders (nerve and neurological disorders)
