Buruli Ulcer

What is it?

A disease which causes death to the skin and underlying tissue.

  • It occurs in tropical countries and subtropical countries in swampy areas.
  • Symptoms occur from two weeks to months to develop from first exposure.

It mainly occurs in world regions of:

  • Central and West Africa
  • Australia
  • Japan
  • Southeast Asia
  • Central and South America

Cause

  • Bacteria: Mycobacterium ulcerans (which release toxins to destoy the skin and underlying tissue)

Symptoms

  • Nodule (hard skin) swelling of the skin 1-2 cm in diameter?
  • After a couple of weeks nodules then forms an ulcer with edges?
  • Tissue destruction (dark and black skin) then occurs around surrounding area?
  • Numbness, muscle pain, bone pain in ulcer area?
  • Osteomyelitis (bone infection), lack of joint movement and disfigurement around or near ulcer area?
