Athletes Foot (Tinea Pedis)

Athlete’s foot is a contagious fungal infection known as tinea pedis.

  • Every human sheds skin from their feet, the fungus lives within the skin and is picked up by others when they walk bare footed.

 

There are  many forms:

 

Interdigital ‘type’

  • It occurs between the toes, mainly between 4th and 5th toe.
  • The skin becomes very scaly which peels and then cracks and becomes very itchy when footwear is removed.
  • It then spreads across and rarely affects the big and 2nd toe.

 

Plantar (moccasin) ‘type’

  • Infection spreads to side and sole of feet and/or heel and is caused by trichophyton rubrum.
  • The skin is pink and tender underneath while the top layer of the skin is very dry and scaly.
  • It is common those who have a history of allergic reactions: Hayfever, allergies, asthma and eczema.

Jungle Rot ‘Vesicle type’

  • These are small vesicles blisters over the instep of foot and/or sole of foot that is caused by an allergic reaction to fungus called ‘Trichophyton mentagrophytes’.
  • A second lot of small vesicles blisters may occur at other parts of the body i.e. arms, hands fingers or chest.
  • It is common those to have long term ‘Interdigital athlete’s foot

Symptoms

Does one have:

Interdigital ‘type’ Infection
  • Between the toes?
  • Itchy (particularly when sock and shoes removed)?
  • Inflamed (red, hot and sore)?
  • Skin broken?
  • White, cracked, peel and/or flaky?
  • Slight odour?
  • Burning or stinging sensation on the skin?
  • One regularly in a sweaty environment i.e. when playing sports or in high temperature conditions?
