What is it?

A serious eye infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (the same virus family as the ‘cold sore virus’ and ‘genital herpes virus’).

General tips

  • You should cover the eye with a light dressing so the infection doesn’t spread any further.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses until the infection has healed, to stop the virus spreading to your eyes.
  • You can take an over-the-counter painkiller such as paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain relief (if suitable, speak to your pharmacist if unsure).
  • Do not attempt to drain the fluid, as this may cause the virus to spread or cause a bacterial infection.
