Tropical Pyomyositis

What is it?

A rare muscle condition of the legs, arms and trunk and is found in mainly humid tropical countries:

  • Amazon rainforest
  • Brazil
  • Central Africa
  • Central America

Cause

  • Bacteria: Staphylococci aureus and streptococci
  • Unknown

Symptoms

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • New rash that has appeared or existing rash getting worst, hard, painful mass, rash and abscess filled with pus which grows and area becomes sensitive to touch?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Aching, painful muscles, muscle cramps/spasms/stiffness, Widespread muscle pain or legs, arms and trunk?
