Trichomoniasis (male)

What is it?

Sexually transmitted disease caused by a parasite infection that form edrils that enters the vagina skin.

  • It can also cause males to have symptoms.
  • The symptoms usually begin between several days to a month after you become infected some have symptoms at all, this can increase the spread of infection to others especially if one has multiple partner or is highly sexually active.

Diagnosis Tests

  • Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs)

In women:

  • Swab taken from the posterior vaginal fornix at the time of speculum examination;
  • Self-taken vaginal swabs produce similar results to clinician-taken samples when using nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) for diagnosis.

In men:

  • First-void urine, using NAATs.

Current sexual partners and any partner(s) in the four weeks prior to presentation should be screened for the full range of STIs and treated for TV irrespective of the results of investigations. Patients should be advised to avoid sexual intercourse for at least one week and until they and their partner(s) have completed treatment and follow-up.

Cause

  • Parasite: Trichomonas Vaginalis
  • Unprotected sexual intercourse (not using a condom, sharing sex toys (not washed after use).
  • Pass from infected mother to baby via womb.

Symptoms

  • Pain and/or burning sensation  after urination and/or ejaculation?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days?
  • White discharge from penis?
  • Discomfort during sexual intercourse?
  • Red, swollen foreskin?

Complications /Information to beware of/General tips:

This condition can lead to:

  • Pregnant women infected with the parasite are more likely to have a preterm birth and are more likely to give birth to a low birth weight baby.
  • Vaginitis
  • Increased risk of becoming infected with H.I.V
