Strongyloidiasis

What is it?

A parasite infection caused by walking barefoot in contaminated soil and enters the skin via a skin injury or opening.

  • Worms lay their eggs in the human body they then hatch in the intestine.
  • The infection can lay ‘dormant’ for years and will develop if your immune system weakens. A person with a weak immune system is vulnerable.

It occurs mainly in world areas of:

  • Central and South America
  • Africa
  • Southeast Asia

Cause

  • Parasite: Strongyloides stericoralis
  • Poor sanitisation
  • Human faeces used as fertiliser in soils
  • Poor personal hygiene
  • Walking barefoot in contaminated soils

Symptoms

  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Periods of constipation and diarrhoea?
  • Unexplained weight loss?
  • Rash?
