What is it?
A parasite infection caused by walking barefoot in contaminated soil and enters the skin via a skin injury or opening.
Worms lay their eggs in the human body they then hatch in the intestine.
The infection can lay ‘dormant’ for years and will develop if your immune system weakens. A person with a weak immune system is vulnerable.
It occurs mainly in world areas of:
Central and South America
Africa
Southeast Asia
Cause
Parasite: Strongyloides stericoralis
Poor sanitisation
Human faeces used as fertiliser in soils
Poor personal hygiene
Walking barefoot in contaminated soils
