What is it?

The narrowing of the blood vessels and causes decreased blood flow to fingers and toes.

  • Attacks occur from one minute to several hours (usually 15 mins) and occurring daily or weekly.
  • Rarely it affects lips, ears, nipples and nose.

Cause

Primary Raynaud’s 

  • Unknown cause

Secondary Raynaud’s (where there is a cause)

Medication

  • Decongestants
  • NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs e.g. Aspirin, Ibuprofen)
  • Corticosteroids (steroids)
  • Kidney disease anaemic drugs: Erythropoietin (Neorecormon, Eprex)
  • Antifungal: Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
  • MAOI Antidepressant
  • Effervescent (soluble sachets and tablets) formulations contain high sodium levels
  • Herbal medication used to relieve menopause:
  • Medication used in long term pain relief:
    • Nalaxone
  • Migraine medication
  • Oestrogen medication:
    • Oral contraceptives
    • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
    • Oestrogen supplements
  • Medication used in pain relief or attention deficit disorders or over excited disorders:

Symptoms

(Rarely affect lips, ears, nose, nipples mainly hands and feet)

  • Skin appears pale due to lack of blood flow?
  • Skin appears blue due to lack of oxygen?
  • The finger/toes digits feel cool and their colour changes from white to blue to red?
  • Feel numb and cold and is in pain?
  • One’s skin become red and has throbbing or tingling sensation when blood returning to area?
  • Feel condition is getting worse and no sign of improving?
