Pruritic Urticarial Papules Plaques of Pregnancy (PUPPP)

What is it?

A common skin condition of pregnancy.

  • It usually occurs in the female person first pregnancy during the third trimester and the chances of having the condition increases further if one is having twins because the skin is getting stretched for the first time and in the case of twins or more it is getting stretched even further.
  • It usually gets better within a few weeks after delivery.
  • It can disappear anywhere from a week before delivery to up to 6 weeks postpartum.
  • It does not affect the health of your baby.
  • It has no long-term consequences.

  • Risk factors include:
    • Being Caucasian
    • Being pregnant with a boy
    • A first pregnancy
    • Maternal hypertension (high blood pressure)
    • Multiples pregnancy
    • Rapid or higher-than-usual weight gain in pregnancy

  • Maybe a weak immune system during pregnancy
  • Maybe Stretching of the skin
  • May be Hormonal changes

Symptoms

  • Small, pink pimple – like spots that appear in the stretch marks?
  • Red, itchy bumps near areas of stretch marks?
  • Bumps may spread to other parts of the body, usually to the chest, arms, buttocks and/or  legs (rarely on face, palms, or soles of the feet)?
  • Bumps may get larger and form raised, red areas that look like hives?
  • Blisters filled with liquid?
  • Itchy skin?
