What is it?
Persons with high phosphate levels in the blood occurs when the kidney cannot remove phosphate fast enough.
- In some persons with long term kidney disease, high phosphate levels cause calcium levels in the blood to drop causing low calcium (hypocalcemia symptoms). since phosphate will bind to calcium in the blood.
Disease or conditions causing toxicity
- Kidney cannot remove phosphate fast enough i.e. Kidney failure
- Disorders of the parathyroid hormone gland and related hormones (hypoparathyroidism – where not enough parathyroid hormone gland is produced or Pseudohypoparathyroidism when there is resistance shown by the end -organs to the parathyroid hormone)
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Muscle damage /injury
- Infections that cause widespread body symptoms
