Nocardiosis

What is it?

A rare bacterial infection that lives in soil, it mainly affects the lungs (which can spread to the brain) and the skin.

  • The skin symptoms can be hard to distinguish from cellulitis.
Persons who work outdoors with soil and who have a weak immune system are particularly vulnerable.

Cause

  • Bacteria: Norcadia species
  • Lung: Breathing in bacteria from infected persons.
  • Skin: Skin injury

Symptoms

Skin symptoms:

  • Wide spread puss filled blisters, open sores?
  • Hot, red, inflamed and swollen skin?

Lung:

  • Dry cough longer than three weeks or breathing difficulties?
  • Chest pain?

Head symptoms:

  • High temperature greater than 38°C, 100°F or over greater than 72hours, chills and sweats?
  • Headache which is on and off or a constant headache longer than 24 hours?

Emotional and general symptoms:

  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Irritated, depressed, anxiety and/or panic attacks?
