What is it?

A waste product found in your urine that forms crystals around the inside of a kidney and block part of ones urinary system.

  • Kidney stones vary in size, some so small that one has no symptoms ‘silent’ stones to rare ones the size of golf balls.

  • Men are affected twice as often as women.

It can be extremely painful often described as being worse than childbirth, broken bones, gunshot wounds, burns, or surgery.

Cause

Calcium stones (generally yellow or brown appearance)

Struvite stones (horn-shaped)

Cystine stones (rare, yellow in appearance, appear like crystals)

Symptoms

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Pain in pelvis area and/or lower back and/or Intense pain in the back or side (or moving pain from back to side) or in groin area (stone damaging in the body and blocking parts of urinary system)?
  • Blood in urine (stone rubbed or damaged inside genital skin)?
  • Burning sensation during urinating (stone rubbed or damaged inside genital skin)?
  • Cloudy and smelly urine?
  • Pain when urinating (stone rubbed or damaged inside genital skin)?
  • Increase thirst, heavy sweating and need to urinate frequently (body wants to remove stone)?

And/or do not wait, phone for an ambulance if have or develop:

  • Sepsis
  • If one cannot pass urine at all (obstruction)

Obstruction 

If one feels there is an obstruction to ones urine flow (could be an obstruction/stone/tumour/infection blocking the flow), symptoms include:

  • Experiencing hesitancy when urinating, like having trouble getting the urine released or noticing a weak and/or intermittent stream of urine?
  • Bladder feels like its not empty after urinating?
  • Straining to urinate?
  • Pain in the side or mid back area or pain moving from abdomen to back area?

General tips

  • Drink at least 2 litres of water a day to increase urine production
  • Limit  intake of non-dairy animal protein (meat) may help reduce stone recurrence.
