What is it?

A genetic and non-genetic (most cases) condition where one has inflamed (hot, red, swollen) muscles.

  • It is found in more men than women with onset usually occurring after age 50 and progresses slowly over months or years

Cause

  • Unknown
  • An autoimmune disease occurs when your body’s disease-fighting cells, called antibodies, attack your healthy cells in this case you blood vessels and muscles.
  • Infection
  • Weak immune system
  • Family history

Symptoms

  • Rash which is patchy, dusky, itchy and reddish or purple on lower arms and legs?
  • Dry and/or scaly and/or rough skin?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Aching, painful muscles, muscle cramps/spasms/stiffness?
  • Weakness and noticeable shrinking of the quadriceps (main muscle of the thighs), causing falls?
  • Weakness in the forearm muscles?
  • Difficulty using arms, body and legs,lack of stamina and/or walking difficulties?
  • Sway backwards and/or knees bend backwards and/or thick lower muscle calves and/or  may walk on toes and/or toe muscle contractions and ‘foot drop’ (can’t lift front of foot)?
  • Weakness of flexor muscles of the fingers used for gripping?
  • Difficulty chewing swallowing, talking, slurred speech?

This condition can lead to:

  • Difficulty swallowing. If the muscles in your esophagus are affected, you may have problems swallowing (dysphagia), which in turn may cause weight loss and malnutrition.
  • Aspirated pneumonia
  • Breathing problems
  • Calcium deposits
