Goodpasteur’s Syndrome

What is it?

A rare autoimmune disease in which antibodies attack the basement membrane in lungs and kidneys (glomerulonephritis), leading to bleeding from the lungs and kidney failure.

  • At times Goodpasture syndrome occurs along with another condition called ‘Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease’.
  • It occurs mainly at years ago 20 years old or at the age of 60 years old for an unknown reason.
  • It can be referred as Anti-glomerular basement membrane disease.

Cause

  • Autoimmune disorder- where the immune system attacks the ears, lungs and kidney tissue
  • Smoking
  • Exposure to organic solvents or hydrocarbon fumes
  • Exposure to metallic dusts
  • Cocaine inhalation
  • Certain types of lung infections

Medication

  • Certain types of medications that affect the immune system i.e. alemtuzumab

Symptoms

Respiratory:

Kidney disease:

  • Nausea and vomiting?
  • Increased blood pressure?
  • Pain with urination?
  • Blood in the urine?
  • Back pain (area below the ribs)?
  • Fatigue?
  • Itching?
  • Confused thinking?
  • Shortness of breath?
