Bejel (Belesh)

What is it?

Skin ulcers which begin in the mouth and then skin eventually causing severe bone disease and open skin wounds (ulcers), this occurs in stages.

  • It is not a sexual transmitted infection.

It is very common in dry, hot climates especially in the countries of:

  • The eastern Mediterranean region
  • Saharan West Africa

Cause

  • Bacteria: Treponema pallidum endemicum
  • Direct skin to skin contact via broken skin
  • Common use of eating and drinking utensils

Symptoms

Initially:

  • Ulcers near the mouth?

Then:

  • Blisters then appear on the back, arms, and legs?
  • Bone pain?
  • Infection of the bone (Osteomyelitis) especially in the legs?
  • Skin ulcers in arms, groin, and anus?
  • Soft lumps (gummas) appear in the mouth and nose?
