Barrett’s Syndrome

What is it?

A complication of heartburn and reflux disease.

The food pipe (esophagus) lining tissue changes and resembles the lining of one’s lower intestine.

Cause

  • Those who have long term gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)  (regurgitation of acid from the stomach into the lower esophagus)

Symptoms

  • Long term persistent indigestion, frequent heartburn or constant abdominal pain?
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, talking and/or slurred speech and/or difficultly in opening the mouth and/or difficult to eat?
  • Pain and difficulty when swallowing?
