Tietze’s Syndrome

What is it?

A rare condition where one has inflammation (hot, red and swelling) of the cartilage tissue (this is a flexible, hard tissue between the bone joints) that joins the breast bone (sternum) to one’s ribs causing mainly swelling.

  • It tends to occur in young adults and can be confused with a heart attack

Cause

Symptoms

  • Sharp pain in one’s upper ribs especially when breathing in or out?
  • Tenderness around upper ribs area (pain if one puts pressure on the ribs)?
  • Swelling around upper ribs area?
  • Ribs hurt when doing strenuous exercise or physical activity where ribs move suddenly?
  • Ribs hurt when coughing or sneezing?
  • Short of breath?
