Behcet’s Syndrome

What is it?

An autoimmune condition when one’s blood vessels become hot red and swollen (inflamed).

  • It is common in the following areas:
  • Far East
  • The Middle East
  • Mediterranean countries i.e.
    • Turkey
    • Iran
    • Israel

Cause

  • Auto-immune condition – when the body thinks it’s under attack and attacks its own part of the body.
    • In cases of Behçet’s disease, it’s thought the immune system mistakenly attacks the blood vessels.

Symptoms

  • Swollen lymph glands and/or reoccurring mouth ulcers?
  • Re-current ulcers in genitals?
  • Difficulty swallowing?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Balance and dizziness problems?
  • Aching, painful muscles, muscle cramps/spasms/stiffness?
  • Joint stiffness and pain?
  • Cold hand and feet which can be numb and painful?
  • Acne-like rash and bumpy rash?
  • Blurred vision?
  • Flashing lights?
  • Floaters where shadows move across ones vision range?
  • Loss of vision?
  • Pain in back of eyes (common in arthritis sufferers)?
  • Pain in eyes which can get worst when one focuses on an object and/or reading?
  • Sensitive to light?
  • Severe redness in eye?

  • Floaters where shadows move across ones vision range?
  • Loss of vision?

  • Blood clots
  • Chest pain (blood clot moving to lungs):
    • Non-stop Coughing?
    • Difficult or laboured breathing (dyspnea)?
    • Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)?
