Whiplash

What is it?

A neck injury caused by a sudden movement of the head forwards, backwards or sideways.

  • It often occurs after a sudden impact such as a road traffic accident.
  • The vigorous movement of the head overstretches and damages the tendons and ligaments in the neck.

Symptoms

  • Neck pain and stiffness and/or tenderness in the neck muscles?
  • Reduced and painful neck movements?
  • Neck pain: Neck pain may be minimal at the time of the accident, with an onset of symptoms occurring during the subsequent 12-72 hours?
  • Headache which is on and off or a constant headache longer than 24 hours (Headache is a frequent symptom of cervical strain)?
  • Shoulder, scapular, and/or arm pain?
  • Visual disturbances (eg, blurred vision, diplopia)?
  • Sensitivity to everyday noise and/or ringing noise within and/or difficulty hearing?
  • Balance and dizziness problems?
  • Concussion?
  • Difficulty sleeping due to pain?
  • Difficult to concentrate and/or difficulty in concentrating and/or memory problems?
  • Overactive (urgency to go to toilet) and/or underactive bladder and/or difficult to start urinating and stop urinating (Strain to urinate due to weak flow)?
  • Loss of bowel control – can’t hold going to the toilet to excrete faeces (bowel incontinence)?
  • One find passing stools difficult (can be painful) and constipated?
