Vibrio Vulnificus

What is it?

A bacterial infection from eating contaminated seafood (oysters, clams and crabs) or if an open wound is exposed to warm sea water.

Europe & Russia

  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • Germany
  • Norway (Svalbard)
  • Sweden

Cause

  • Bacteria: V vulnificus

Symptoms

If eaten seafood:

  • Widespread blood filled blisters?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
  • Diarrhoea?
  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats?
  • Balance and dizziness problem?

Temperature for cooking crab or crayfish

  • The FDA advises cooking crab or crayfish to 145 F (or 63 C). That means that the internal temperature of the crab/crayfish should reach 145 F (63 C).
  • The meat should be opaque and pearly.

  • Always the above meats thoroughly and one should avoid eating them raw including from frozen.
  • Travelers should be advised to avoid traditional meals containing undercooked freshwater crustaceans.
