Heart valves (see images) are small flaps of skin that helps to stop blood that flows through the heart travelling in the wrong direction.
Some persons have no symptoms while other may notice it suddenly if a severe form develops
Some persons develop symptoms slowly as the the disease becomes progressively worst.
The heart may compensate the damage over a period of time, but their maybe a point where the heat cannot compensate anymore and damage to the heart is not reversible.
Prevention and slowing the condition down in this case is the best cure.
Valve Terminology
A valve that has become to floppy is known as a prolapse.
A valve that leaks and therefore blood flows the wrong was is knowns as regurgitation
A valve that does not open as wide as it should is known as stenosis.
Cause
Heart failure (the heart becomes larger and less efficient changing the structure and shape of the chambers in the heart thus affecting the valves
Cardiomyopathy (problem with the heart muscles -the muscles are attached to the valve)
