Tularaemia

What is it?

A bacterial infection transmitted from ticks and other animal such as rabbits, squirrels, cats and mosquitoes.

  • A large red lump develops 2-5 days after being bitten and opens as a sore.

It occurs mainly in world regions of:

  • China
  • Europe
  • Japan
  • Middle East
  • North America
  • Russia

Cause

  • Bacteria: Francella tularensis type A is more serious than type B
  • Infection via:
    • Tick bites
    • Eating undercooked, infected animal meat or drinking contaminated water
    • Handling of infectious matter
    • Inhalation

Symptoms

  • High temperature greater than 38°C (100°F) or over and/or chills and sweats longer than 72 hours?
  • Headache which is on and off or a constant headache longer than 24 hours?
  • Pain, redness, and itching of the eyes (conjunctivitis)?
  • General discomfort (muscle weakness), uneasiness or ill feeling (malaise) and/or fatigue (tiredness)?
  • Swollen lymph glands and/or reoccurring mouth ulcers?
  • Red lump rash (filled with pus) which becomes an open sore at site of entry (primary rash)?
  • Ulcer becomes like a black scab (necrotic eschar) which can leave a scar?
  • Red lumps and blisters, itchy and sore skin filled with pus of various sizes and appearance (secondary rash)?
  • Red streaks, swollen and sore rash (swelling of lymph glands)?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days (one day if a child)?
