Trichomoniasis

What is it?

Sexually transmitted disease caused by a parasite infection that form edrils that enters the vagina skin.

  • It can also cause males to have symptoms.
  • The symptoms usually begin between several days to a month after you become infected some have symptoms at all, this can increase the spread of infection to others especially if one has multiple partner or is highly sexually active.

Cause

  • Parasite: Trichomonas Vaginalis (the parasite lives with in the vagina and the penis invading the skin causing symptoms)
  • Unprotected sexual intercourse (not using a condom, sharing sex toys (not washed after use).
  • Skin-to-skin contact involving the vagina or penis
  • Pass from infected mother to baby via womb.

Symptoms

Female:

  • Itchiness, swelling and soreness in vagina?
  • Thick yellow or green, frothy appearance vaginal discharge, fishy, unpleasant smell?
  • Discomfort during sexual intercourse?
  • Pain when pass urine?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days?
  • Spotting?
  • Urge to urinate more frequently?

Male:

  • Pain and/or burning sensation  after urination and/or ejaculation?
  • Abdominal pain and/or are constant violently vomiting or vomiting longer than two days?
  • White discharge from penis?
  • Discomfort during sexual intercourse?
  • Red, swollen foreskin?

Complications /Information to beware of/General tips:

This condition can lead to:

  • Pregnant women infected with the parasite are more likely to have a preterm birth and are more likely to give birth to a low birth weight baby.
  • Vaginitis
  • Increased risk of becoming infected with H.I.V
