Trachoma

What is it?

A contagious bacterial eye infection that can cause a loss of vision that is common in ages 1-5 yrs and less commonly adults.

  • It can cause eyelids to turn inward.
  • Over time, as eyelashes scrape the eyeball, it can cause permanent eye damage.

Cause

  • Passed from  infected mother to baby:
  • Direct physical contact from infected person semen or secretions that enters in the eye.
  • Sharing towels, flannels, clothes, bed linen and toys
  • Flies
