Swollen Ankles

  • In most cases one’s feet and ankles look normal in the morning, but by the end of the day they’re swollen, one is most likely suffering from painless oedema, or swelling of the ankles and feet this happens because gravity pulls fluids down into your feet and ankles, causing them to swell.
  • Treatment for swelling or oedema that does not go away on its own will depend on the cause.

 

 

Cause

  • As one gets older
  • Warm days
  • Long airplane flights or car rides, as well as standing for long periods of time, often lead to some swelling in the feet and ankles
  • standing or sitting for long periods
  • Active leg sports
  • Tight clothing including tight shoes
  • Pregnancy or hormonal changes i.e PMS
  • Eating too much salty food (salt can cause fluid retention)
  • Dehydration
  • Overweight
  • Medical conditions i.e. Heart disease, high blood pressure, leg infections and injury
  • Medication
